I modeled myself after Lou. Every time I hire someone, I tell them, “I’ll try you out for two weeks. If I don’t like you.. I’ll fire you! If you don’t like me… I’ll fire you!”

What happened to all the real men on tv? Lou Grant, Barney Miller, James Evans (the dad on Good Times)… They were hot–and definitely NOT in any way Paris Hilton & co. would see!!!

I remember reading about (or hearing on the commentary) that this scene just didn’t fall into place during the first go around, and that is was re-shot later to the get the tone just right. Great piece of television. Flawless writing, timing and execution. Completely holds up today. Thanks for the post!
